Kassandra, better known as Kassie came into my life at a time where I saw no hope, and my future unknown. She, her son, and daughter changed that immediately. Kassie loved me as her own. Boy, was I lucky! Our families blended so naturally. The love so pure and genuine. Kassie, was one of the most giving souls I'd ever had the pleasure of knowing, and I was blessed to have called her 'Mom'.
She was a Grandmother above all else, mother, daughter, sister, and friend to many. She was unapologetically 'Kassie'.
She struggled on and off with various health issues, although she'd never let them get in her way. She had pneumonia towards the end of winter that she had a terrible time overcoming, unable to regain strength to heal.
Friday April 5th she went into the ER. Her O2 level was dangerously low. They were able to get her O2 and vitals stabilized. Within minutes the doctor and nurses began all sorts of tests.
A few hours after admittance the doctor had determined that she had been in what she referred to as 'prolong liver failure' and the doctor immediately wanted to transfer her to Fort Wayne so Kassie would have all the specialists right there with her.
We were hopeful, she'd finally get answers to the questions she had been asking her doctors.
However during her transfer her O2 dropped which caused cardiac arrest. They resuscitated her successfully but damage had already been done.
After reaching Fort Wayne, she was put on full life support and we anxiously awaited results from further testing.
Her medical team determined based on damage, her brain was without oxygen for 25+ minutes causing a great portion of her brain, dead...and the remainder was riddled with clots due to lack of oxygen. We'd never get her back. She would never come home.
We were left to make one of the most difficult choices ever. However, we soon learned she was a total organ donor. If we took her off life support, and she passed within their window. Her organs would go on to save at least 2 lives, and help numerous others.
Much like her time on Earth in death she would continue to give. Those 2 Recipient's are now off dialysis. Our tragedy answered their prayers.
She was 51 years young. A full time care giver to her disabled daughter Kayla (a firecracker just like Momma).
Kassie played a vital and active role in her son Shawn's life watching and continuing to guide him as new father. A full time Grandmother, her grand children were her life. She loved spending her days with her youngest grandchild Reed. He was her sunshine. Singing, watching Spiderman, playing dinosaurs. She loved watching her bonus grandchildren grow and thrive and come into young adulthood. We all shared such wonderful bonds, and our home and our 'normal' will never be the same.
We desperately want to raise these funds to ensure that she gets the honorable departure she most certainly deserves. All funds will go directly to after death arrangements, and a celebration of life.
Kassies love will never die, and she'll never be forgotten.
