Kassidy's NICU Journey

Hi everyone,

I am Jessica & this is my birth story ~

The morning of June 4 my water broke at home, contractions began, and I was admitted at 7cm.

Shortly after, Kassidy was born a preemie at 27 weeks on June 4 weighing 2lbs & 2oz. She was immediately taken to the NICU and we were finally able to see her 4 hours later.

Kassidy was intubated since birth, has had multiple blood transfusions, suffered the effects of pneumothorax (collapsed lung), and diagnosed with a congenital heart disease called patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) which in her case required surgery to fix.

She was transported via ambulance to Sunrise Children's Hospital where she was able to get her heart surgery. After spending a few days there to recover we transferred Kassidy back to a hospital closer to our home.

Right now, Kassidys biggest challenge is Apnea of Prematurity (AOP). AOP occurs when newborns, especially those born prematurely, stop breathing for short periods of time. Most times, Kassidy is able to self recover from her "spells" but continues to be monitored very closely.

We have spent 86 days in the NICU and we hope that we can bring Kassidy home in October.
