Volunteer Trip To Peru
Donation protected
Hello and thank you for stumbling across my page!
My name is Katherine MacGregor and I am raising money for my trip to Peru in the summer of 2015!
I am 19 years old and from a small city called Barrie, Ontario (about an hour north of Toronto!). I graduated from Bear Creek Secondary School with Honours in 2013, while receiving a number of awards for my work at the school.
So some random facts on me: I am a hardcore Marvel junkie, and collector of Funko! Pop figures. (seriously it's getting bad..) My favourite artists of all time have to be Hedley, Marianas Trench, Watsky and P!nk. I workout frequently, play soccer, softball, and ultimate (yes it is so a sport!). My favourite book is Harper Lee's 'To Kill a Mocking Bird', and I am also a hardcore fan of Harry Potter. Always.
I am currently a student at the University of Waterloo where I am pursuing my Honours in Global Peace and Conflict Studies, while doing a double minor in Sociology and History respectively. While attending school I work part time, as well as full-time during the summer, as I am putting myself through school alone.
I have always wanted to go abroad and do volunteer work, but have been unable to due to financial issues at home. Now before I get any hate-mail claiming I should help those at home before going overseas let me just say one thing: I have.
I have worked hard the last few years volunteering and raising money for food banks, the SPCA, nearby schools, cancer research, the homeless, people with mental health issues, and much more. In doing so I even won an award at my High school graduation for my participation in my school's community. All of this being simply volunteer work where I got nothing out of it other than a smile from those I've helped along the way.
Now, I want to go abroad, not only to see others smile but to bring back what I learn that and imp
lement it on my everyday life.
I am looking to travel with a smaller organization called Reach Out Volunteers. This organization, based out of Australia, is incredible for showing its commitment to the communities it helps. Unlike many NGOs they have proven time and time again that they return to the villages that they help out in, to make sure things are still working as planned. This is incredibly important for a community to grow with their new technology. Even something as ‘simple’ as a well can break, and without someone knowing how to fix it, people then have to give up on this idea, and go back to hiking kilometers for the clean water that was once meters away. So, to make sure this doesn’t happen, ROV not only sends people back, but works with the village so that they understand the mechanics of what is being brought in.
So I realized I forgot to explain what this money goes towards! (Silly me) So the money is going towards two things in perticular. The first 2,000 is going towards my roundtrip flight (approx. $1,500), my travel insurance (approx. $100) and my vaccines (approx. $400). The second $2,000 will go towards the actual trip itself. This pays completely for all building materials, as well as giving the money directly to the community that will be accepting me into their homes. This money can then be used for sustaining the completed projects, or funding other projects. Now, I understand that the amount may not be exact, and so any and all money that is recieved that does not go to my exact costs will be used to purchase necessities to bring down. This will include (but not limited to) shoes, clothes, and toys for children. Whatever money is then left over from this (as I cannot possibly bring as much as I'd like to) will then be donated to a charity within Canada. For example: the Women's Shelter, Red Cross, the Salvation Army, etc. These are just some of the organizations I have worked with in the past and know they could always use the extra money.
REWARDS ARE UP!
To everyone who has already donated, no need to fret, you're already included in the rewards! (Plus a secret something for donating so early! ;) )
