KATIE'S STORY
On Memorial Day weekend of 2021, Katie Callaghan called in sick to work at Blackstone Meatball where she was a server. Her symptoms were unusual: a weird tingling and numbness in her feet, hands, and lips, and deep pain in her hips, back and legs. It took a trip to her doctor’s office and two visits to the emergency room before she was finally diagnosed with a severe case of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder in which the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves.
Ten days after her symptoms began Katie had developed full body paralysis, could no longer breathe on her own, and was placed on a ventilator. She spent nearly a month in the hospital ICU before transferring to Madonna Hospital in Lincoln, where she would undergo extensive rehabilitation to relearn how to swallow, talk, eat, see, hold a toothbrush, put on clothes, get into and out of a wheelchair, and finally, to walk again. At the end of the August, Katie returned home in Omaha, where she lives with her parents, and continues therapy at the Madonna Omaha location.
