Katie Callaghan's Medical Support Fund

Katie Callaghan is a beloved Agriculture and Ag Mechanics teacher at Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas, Katie gives so many hours of personal time outside of her classroom working with her FFA students on showmanship, driving animals to the vet, and attending weekend livestock shows to support and coach her goat students. Her life revolved around her students.

On November 18, Katie's life changed forever. She had a total hysterectomy at the young age of 28 years old due to severe endometriosis, adenomyosis, PCOS, and cervical cancer. Her surgery was very difficult and Katie was left without the use of her bladder post-op along with some abnormal, excruciating pain. Katie was in and out of the emergency room for high fevers and post-op infections weeks following her surgery. On December 22, she was diagnosed with COVID and admitted after an anaphylactic reaction to an infusion. Katie remained hospitalized for 15 days having both Delta and Omicron variants due to her weakened immune system, and severe damage was done to her lungs, heart, and brain forcing Katie to have to relearn basic functions like raising her arms and walking. She was officially diagnosed with Long Covid and will impact how she lives the rest of her life.

Once Katie leaves rehab with basic functions managed, she will be under home health care to finish her rehab so that she can return to the classroom. Due to complications from COVID and rehab, Katie will be on unpaid leave from the school district having run out of any sick or leave time. She is also ineligible for the sick leave pool. Katie's hospital and medical bills from this year will be overwhelming now that they have started arriving and she cannot work.

The only prized possessions in Katie's life are her two horses, Nilla and Lyla! Katie is considering selling her horses to pay for her rent, basic necessities and medical bills, which would bring even more heartbreak to her after everything she's gone through. Katie has given SO MUCH to the Arlington community and hundreds of students - PLEASE consider helping her as we try to raise enough money to support her unpaid leave and loss of wages due to Long COVID and her medical needs.
