Katie’s Push For Piping
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Katie and here’s why I’m fundraising
Piping is my life. Before piping, my existence was pretty empty, but now I have something to live for and it’s what’s given me confidence, a new way to express myself, and has introduced me to a fantastic community where I have found acceptance.
I am a wheelchair user due to chronic pain and I also have other conditions, such as arthritis. I try not to let my disabilities get in the way of my passion, however with being in the wheelchair it means I can’t participate in as many piping events as I would like. For example, marching events or solo competitions that take place on grass/rough terrain (such as Highland games).
As I had spinal surgery last October, I’m restricted as to what wheelchairs I can use. Because I already have a powerchair provided by the NHS, they cannot provide me with a manual wheelchair that would suit my needs. If I did have a manual wheelchair, I would be able to take part in all the activities I dream of doing. Getting into a competing band, spending my summers touring round all the highland games, even joining in with the Big Band at Piping Live – all these would be possible, but only if I can be pushed and play the pipes at the same time.
I intended on going to loads of Highland games this year, but due to poor weather conditions I couldn’t go because the powerchair can’t make its way over wet grass. The games I did go to were horrible to navigate around, practically impossible - and I never use that word!
Without a manual chair, I don’t know how my future as a competitive piper will unfold. I’m trying to raise funds though bake sales and busking, however the chair is just too expensive for me to afford on my own.
How can you help?
I understand that these are tough times for everyone, but I would greatly appreciate all and any help I can get. Even if you can’t donate, please share my story and tell your friends. Every penny is a penny closer to the target, and a big step closer to changing my piping career for the better.
Thank you!
