Katy's Indonesia Mental Health Placement SLVglobal
Donation protected
As somebody who has personally struggled with poor mental health in the past, I am passionate about promoting its awareness in a positive light and supporting others who are experiencing difficulties. As such, I am really proud to have been accepted on the SLV Global Bali Placements Programme which allows me the opportunity to work as a volunteer abroad with individuals experiencing mental health issues.
Whilst in the UK real progress is being made with more people talking about their mental health and how it impacts on their daily life, the same progress has not been seen in poorer countries. Sadly, there is still a stigma attached to mental health and limited resources to support those who are suffering.
I will be volunteering for four weeks and travelling to Indonesia to provide support for those individuals suffering from mental health issues living in communities with little in the way of facilities and resources. Because of my own experience, I find that this type of support comes naturally to me and I welcome the opportunity to help others.
During my time in Indonesia, I will visit one of Indonesia’s only psychiatric facilities to run therapeutic meetings and work in schools with children with specific needs. There are Community outreach programs to benefit the elderly residents, and I will have the opportunity to teach English within the community. Tourism is Bali's main enterprise and so the English language is of great value as it provides individuals with better career prospects.
I have set up this Go Fund Me page hoping to raise enough money to cover the workshop, training fees and flights as below:
Placement Acceptance Fee: £250 (non-refundable)
Placement fee & Professional training sessions & Accommodation: £1,450
Flights & Visa & Vaccinations & Travel insurance & Project resources: £1500
I know this is a huge ask but I am so lucky to have been accepted onto the SLV Global programme which is renowned for helping vulnerable people in poor countries by promoting positive mental health and operating sustainable projects.
I would be so grateful for any contribution to support me on this journey and whilst I believe this will be a challenging placement, I also believe it will be a truly rewarding one!
Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you in advance for any donations making this valuable journey possible.
