Up until her tragic car accident in early June, Kayla was a vibrant, independent, and forward thinking 25-year-old who directed her energy toward following her dream of one day owning a haircutting salon that catered to both men and women. After earning a cosmetology and a barber license, she started cutting hair professionally this past December. After all of her hard work, she was sitting on top of the world and everyone could see how much she was thriving.
Kayla was heading home that fateful night when a car unexpectedly turned left into her lane. She swerved to avoid the car, went into a spin, overcorrected, and hit a tree. Police dispatch listed her fate as a fatality. Although she was revived at the hospital, she sustained a catastrophic brain injury as well as numerous other physical injuries. The initial grim prognosis was shattering: at best a 1% survival rate, with “survival” described as merely existing in a persistent vegetative state.
Doctors performed a series of emergency interventions, but finally gave up on Kayla’s recovery. Just as hope was withering and last rites were being planned, one incredibly brave nurse challenged the medical team. Insisting that their end-of-life stance was premature, she advocated for more time. Within days of her intervention, Kayla was opening and tracking with her eyes and responding nonverbally to nurses and family. Within a week the ventilator was removed and she was able to breathe on her own! Now she is learning how to orally feed herself, how to walk with the support of a walker and parallel bars, and how to sit in a wheelchair unaided. She has even started to verbalize in simple sentences telling her parents, “I love you.”
Kayla’s awe-inspiring achievements are so breathtaking they transcend a scientific or medical explanation. However, her needs are great and she will require long-term support. This Go Fund Me page has been created to raise money to help cover costs related to her ongoing and future specialized rehabilitation. Thank you for your contribution and may Kayla’s radiating spirit add meaning to your life.
