Hello. My name is Heather James.

After contracting spinal meningitis as an infant, I developed hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus happens when a person's body is incapable of draining off their cerebrospinal fluid naturally.

The treatment for hydrocephalus is called a "shunt". A catheter with a valve runs from the brain to elsewhere in the body to drain off the CSF.

My 1st shunt was placed in 1980. I had a new one placed in 2001.

But, after struggling for a long time, on July 10,2023 I had the old valve replaced with a programmable one.

I am optimistic that this will improve my health.

But, unfortunately, now we are left with some medical bills and we could really use a hand to cover them as things are tight as it is.

After our insurance, we need about $1,800.

We would really appreciate any help you can give.

I am not sure if I am doing this update correctly. But thank you so much everyone for your support!! After my most recent neurosurgeon appointment, when my doctor changed the setting on my new programmable shunt valve, I am feeling better than I have in a long time. My incision is healing really well and I was so glad to get the staples out!!
