Diego’s Recovery

Dear friend’s and family,

On Sunday, April 2nd my sisters son Diego had a pool diving accident in Samaná, Dominican Republic. He was airlifted to a hospital in Santo Domingo on Monday and underwent emergency surgery to stabilize fractures of the C5 and C6 cervical spine. Despite the surgery, he's been left with a spinal cord injury and needs extensive therapy.

Due to his injuries, he needs specialized physical and occupational therapy to regain as much function as possible. Unfortunately, there are currently no rehabilitation centers in the Dominican Republic that can offer the equipment and expertise required to give him the best chance at a long term recovery. His team of Doctors have recommended that he be transferred as soon as possible to the United States to begin his rehabilitation.

He will need a great deal of support in the months ahead. His family has been overwhelmed at the outpouring of love and offers of help. His family have started a GoFundMe for loved ones to have a direct hand in helping Diego receive the best care possible, including mobility aids, rehabilitation, nursing care, transportation, and any further interventions that might be required to help him regain mobility and function.

For those of you who don’t know Diego well, he is the 17 year old son of Natalia Longaray and Joan Ferrer. A sports fanatic since he was very small, his high-school graduation would be June 2023 and he has already been accepted and enrolled at his first choice college here in DR. Most important of all, Diego is loved by everyone. He is part of a close-knit group of Friends who have supported him greatly since the accident occurred, to such a degree that we were asked at the hospital if the Young man who suffered the accident was an elected representative to have so many visitors!

Queridos Amigos y Familiares:

El domingo 2 de abril nuestro querido Diego tuvo un accidente en una piscina en Samaná. Fue transportado vía helicóptero a CEDIMAT en Santo Domingo, donde fue sometido a una cirugía para estabilizar fracturas a su columna cervical a nivel de C5 y C6. A pesar del increíble progreso que hemos visto desde el día de la cirugía, , por lo que necesita terapia de rehabilitación física y ocupacional especializada para tratar de que recupere la mayor funcionalidad posible.

Lamentablemente, no existe en República Dominicana un centro especializado con los equipos avanzados y los expertos necesarios que le puedan brindar el mejor chance de recuperación a largo plazo. Su equipo médico ha recomendado su traslado a USA lo antes posible para dar inicio a sus terapias.

Diego necesitará una gran cantidad de apoyo en los siguientes meses. Su familia se siente profundamente agradecida frente a todas las muestras de amor y ofertas de ayuda. Hemos establecido este GoFundMe para que todos sus allegados puedan aportar de forma directa y así ayudar a que Diego reciba el mejor cuidado posible, incluyendo con equipos, rehabilitación, enfermeras, transporte, y cualquier intervención adicional requerida para su recuperación.

Para los que no lo conocen de cerca, Diego, el hijo de Natalia Longaray y Joan Ferrer, tiene 17 años. Es un fanático de los deportes desde pequeño, su graduación de secundaria sería este año en junio, y ya ha sido aceptado e inscrito en la universidad para estudiar aquí en República Dominicana. Más importante de todo, Diego es querido por todos, es parte de un grupo de amigos muy unidos que lo han apoyado al máximo desde que sucedió el accidente, a tal punto que nos preguntaron que si el muchacho del accidente era diputado que lo visitaban tantas personas!
