Keene and Kenzie Fire Fund

It had been 7 days of throwing a few salvageable items in boxes, a barrage of communications with the insurance company, renting a uhaul, asking for volunteers to help move the boxes from her apartment before my friend Keene Miller called to tell me her apartment caught fire and she lost 90% of everything.

On December 28th at 7am, she and her special needs daughter, Kenzie, heard banging at the door telling them they had 10 minutes to get out because their apartment building was on fire. An electrical fire had started in the empty unit two doors from hers and the smoke had already started to fill their apartment. Thankfully the Maintenance Manager, went back into the smoke filled apartment to rescue her daughter's therapy cat. Keene and her daughter focused on finding temporary lodging while making periodic trips to pack what they could from the damage.

The event was broadcast on Channel 5 news.

Two days later, Keene went to pick up more items only to hear what sounded like another fire alarm. When she opened the door to her place, the sound was piercing. The apartment caught fire a second time from smoldering material. This time the fire department had to use foam and water, essentially destroying any chance of salvaging what was left.

Insurance doesn’t even cover half of the damaged items from the macro of finding a new place to live to the micro of washing her daughter's smoke-filled clothing 3 times at a local coin laundry to get the smoke smell out. Almost all of Keene's clothes are gone.

She would be very appreciative of anything you can contribute. Keene is focused on new beginnings and trying not to look at the past. She is staying strong for daughter's well being.
