Keep 2nd Street Farm Growing

2nd Street Farm transformed an empty, overgrown lot in South Troy from garbage heap to compost heap in 2017. Then beds were built, trees and branches were buried for hugelkultur, and both flowers and food for the neighborhood and surrounding community began to flourish. The first urban farm of its kind in South Troy, 2nd Street Farm has supported the healthy diets of more than 40 sustaining community members and even more weekly visitors to the farm stand.
Now farmer and community activist, Dara Silbermann needs your help to keep the farm thriving amidst a rash of recent challenges. Theft of tools, supplies, and plants has become rampant over the past month. A cold, dry spring has made natural water scarce for the farm, and the City of Troy has quoted her over $7000 just to put a spigot on the lot. Fencing will need to be installed. Signs need putting up. This needs to happen now if 2nd Street Farm is to continue its valuable work.
We are asking for your support today. The goal of $5725 will support 2nd Street Farm in these ways by installing water on the lot, theft recovery for crops lost, fencing and security lights to prevent future break-ins, a sign to be painted by a local Black/Queer artist, and professional photos to be taken by a local Black photographer. 2nd Street Farm is committed to using its space and resources to support the community by listening to the needs of the community and providing simple, easy access to locally grown, healthy, affordable produce.
The many neighbors and community members who regularly visit Dara's market will be extremely grateful if you can help provide the necessary funding for securing 2nd Street Farm's future. Showing up with your dollars to support this effort sends a clear message to the city and its residents that we love our local farmers and advocate for their health and well-being by continuing their work to provide for ours.
Thank you for your generous contributions and for believing that together we can sustain this effort to keep healthy, local food growing in South Troy with Dara Silbermann and 2nd Street Farm.
