Alan Blackman is a brilliant and talented calligrapher. He’s made his living in a wide variety of roles, including the practice and international teaching of calligraphy. Two of his fonts have been purchased by Adobe; Galahad in 1994 https://fonts.adobe.com/fonts/galahad and Say Cheese in 2012. https://www.linotype.com/300392/say-cheese-family.html
Many people are familiar with Alan through his “Letters to Myself” first day cover envelope series, which has been exhibited at national calligraphy conferences in 1986 and 1987, and most recently at the San Francisco Public Library in 2015. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3huCgp12MEc
Alan turned 92 in May of 2020, and has hit hard times financially. We (his family) are helping as much as possible, and also asking for assistance from the many people who know and love or admire Alan. He’s been happy in his San Francisco apartment for many years and we want to keep it that way. Our GoFundMe goal is focused on rent and living expenses.
We’ve opened a new bank account and will pay for his rent, utilities and other needs from it. Anything that you can contribute would be appreciated more than we can say.
