My 8 year old son Kobe's love of skateboarding has always been real, large and exciting.
He enjoyed his lessons, learning new tricks and really pushing himself to succeed.
Local competitions became something to look forward to......until one Sunday the 20th May when a freak accident left him bloodied, bruised and toothless.
Kobe's front adult tooth was knocked out, unable to be saved. The bone above this tooth was fractured so high up he will need a bone graft to replace bone before an implant can be inserted.
Kobe suffered a hairline fracture to his bottom tooth, deep lacerations to his lower lip inside and out right down to the muscle which required 6 stiches.
Prior to the implant Kobe will need a plate/denture made every 1 1/2 - 2 yrs as his mouth continues to grow. The next of many dentist visits continues on the 15th June to attend to the fractured tooth and the rebuild of his front tooth.
The cost of a denture is approximately $2000 each time and the bone graph and implant will be around $10,000 - $12,000
It is certain other costs will arise along the way which will need to be dealt with accordingly ie: consultations, x-rays and possible nerve damage.
This rogue skateboard that smashed into our boy's face at blinding speed as he waited patiently to compete has changed our lives forever.
We thank God every day that the board didn't connect with his head or throat but regardless as a mum seeing your baby hurt so badly was hard to bare.
Kobe always had a smile on his face but the accident has hidden that smile if only for awhile. I know it is still there, and our focus is to bring it back.
As your average working class family we push through life with little but have so much love in our hearts and that is the most important thing.
Yes we will struggle with this expense and Yes we are a little fearfull of the road ahead with other family health issues to contend with also so I guess this is why we have turned to you all for support.
Thankyou
These photos don't really show the full extent of the damage as Kobe simply couldn't open his mouth very far the first few days after the accident.
