Keep Raka Off the Street and Rebuild Her Dreams!

Our beloved soul sister Raka is on the verge of homelessness and needs our help. If you know Raka, you know she is hard working and extremely giving. A talented body worker, doula, nan he mixologist and hostess of healing circles and events, she always puts in 110% and gives so much more than she asks for. Last week when I made a post seeking support for a newly post partum low income mama who was struggling, she was among the first to volunteer, offering free post partum doula care even as she herself is being served eviction papers.

Like so many bodyworkers and event vendors, Raka’s ability to earn income has been catastrophically impacted by the pandemic. Additionally, she suffered a traumatic hospitalization last year, followed by additional losses that have left her spiraling, trying to manage complex PTSD symptoms and poverty in an ongoing pandemic. Recently, her car broke down and won’t start even after paying for costly repairs, and the lack of reliable transportation is severely impacting her ability to take advantage of work opportunities. She has no family support. A woman of color and child of immigrants, Raka has worked hard her whole life to break the cycle of poverty and heal from a background of abuse, neglect, and domestic violence. But as we know, these cycles are hard to break, solidified in systemic racism and classism. I hope we can all chip in and help Raka get back on her feet, with a safe place to live, some time to heal, and the means to rebuild her business and support herself going forward.
