Keep Reality Ministries Strong
7 years ago we moved to Durham, NC after searching for a place that would be a good forever home for Jeffrey. Durham seemed like a perfect balance of contrasts : big enough yet small enough, gritty enough yet refined enough.
There was another factor. On one of my early fact finding trips to Durham I visited a
place called Reality Ministries. They are an organization where people with and without
disabilities come together to share life in all its messy reality. They sing, eat, laugh, cry,
pray, play and so much more. They don’t try to “fix” anyone and there is no long list of
eligibility requirements.
It is unlike any other group I know of. We decided that if such a group could thrive in
Durham, it was a strong indication it would be a good place to make our home.
Jeff has participated in Reality programs since we arrived. He has flourished in a
community where he is loved and treasured for his unique self. He goes to Daytime
programs twice a week, hosts a Home Group, and volunteers at Reality’s front desk. He is
independent, confident and fulfilled.
I began to volunteer at Reality because I wanted to give back some of what Jeff was receiving. I quickly found out that with these amazing people the line between “giving” and “receiving “ is blurred.
Dana and I have developed a friendship that is enduring. She always greets me with a
“meow” to which I reply “woof”. That seems to define how different we are, and yet I have
learned that friendships can thrive regardless of age, color, background, ability and even
pet preference. I am ongoing volunteer and Board member.
I have created this Go Fund Me page to benefit Reality Ministries. During the Stay At Home order Reality continues to connect through phone calls, email, snail mail and Zoom. But our largest event of the year, The Talent Show, had to be cancelled.
Your donation will help ensure that the doors will reopen once it’s safe to do so, so we can once again experience heart of connection and meaningful relationship.
A donation of any amount helps. The Board has agreed to match all donations up to $71,000 by June 30.
