Keep Steven Neher Fighting for Life

Anyone who knows Steven Neher will surely describe him as “Full of Life!” Right now, Steven is fighting for his life.
I hope you'll join myself along with family and friends in raising funds to provide for unplanned medical expenses, ongoing household expenses, mortgage, car payment, utilities, and the disruption to his income during this challenging time.
On November 25th Steven tested positive for SARS CoV. We believe he contracted COVID at his job where he works in a prison in a Frontline capacity as a Nurse Practitioner.
What began as a feeling of discomfort and general body aches, continued to the no taste or smell symptoms., then headaches and fever which were then controlled with Tylenol.
Breathing problems began to appear after 6 days with a burning sensation and feeling short winded when walking upstairs. Next higher fevers, with chills and skin feeling like pins and needles.
On Dec. 5th Steven’s oxygen levels fell below 87 and he was transported by ambulance to the hospital. He has been in ICU since then. At first, he was stabilized with an oxygen tube insert. A chest x-ray indicated COVID Pneumonia. This diagnosis was then changed to ARDS, Acute respiratory distress syndrome.
On Dec. 11th he was able to begin an experimental drug called Aviptadil. https://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04311697 Unfortunately, oxygen levels dropped again, and on Dec. 13th he needed a full BiPAP mask in order to breath.
On Dec. 15th it became necessary for Steven to be placed on a ventilator. Yesterday, he was stable, all his other organs look good, but he was requiring 100% oxygen provided by a life support ventilator. The hope is with the ventilator Steven’s lungs can heal themselves, while providing him the oxygen needed to stay alive. Steven is also being supported by a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP25GJg_eRM&feature=youtu.be There are not many of these beds available, so we were encouraged that he was given one.
Today Dec. 17 has not given us the positive news that we wanted. He is not responding well with the ventilator. The hospital is moving Steven from ICU to CVICU and will be placing him on ECMO, a life support machine that takes over the functions of the lungs. https://www.cuimc.columbia.edu/news/ecmo-support-may-save-lives-covid-19
When Steven is able to be off these life support measures, he will most likely need physical, respiratory, and occupational therapy to regain his full strength and mobility to return to work. We do not know how long a full recovery will take.
Elizabeth Alesafar, the organizer of this GoFundMe, is Steven Neher’s Aunt. Any funds withdrawn from this GoFundMe will be deposited into an account that will be used directly for the benefit of Steven Neher.
Please keep Steven in your thoughts and prayers.
