Keep The Bedell Irish Language Bible in Ireland
Donation protected
The Cotton Library stands unique in Irish culture. It is the only surviving Diocesan Library to still be housed within the structure of its founding cathedral. Based in Lismore, Co. Waterford, the library holds 2000 mostly leather-bound volumes and some ancient manuscripts in a total of twelve languages. As well as theology, the collection holds volumes on philosophy, antiquities and travel. The Cotton Library now has a rare opportunity to buy a Bedell Irish Language Bible for the collection. This is the first Irish language translation of the Old Testament. Finally published in 1685 after an eventful early life worthy of a thriller, involving the Established Church, Irish rebel Chieftains and scientist Robert Boyle. Sadly, we can’t afford to buy it ourselves, which is why we are asking for your help to secure this piece of Irish history.
Our target is €5000, which will cover the purchase of the Bible and its future preservation and display.
We know that times are difficult, a small donation is all we ask of you, the price of a coffee perhaps?
