What happened?
Well, I almost died...several times. May of you may have heard this already in an email in fact.
Over the past few years, for a number of reasons, I’ve been involved/struggling/coping/fighting with Major Depressive Disorder and Complex PTSD. I’ve been in the hospital for suicidal thoughts (or near attempts) four times in the past three years. Most recently, April 2019, was certainly the closest that I came to actually following through on a plan. It terrified the ever living snot out of me and those who already know. While all the inpatient hospital stays have been incredibly taxing on our family, they have been life saving. However, they are just short term acute care and our family needs to find something more sustainable to truly help long term.
Recommend Treatment:
At this point, I've tried a number of various treatments ranging from prescription medications, homeopathic remedies, and various talk and behavioral therapies.
While I will continue to meet with a variety of doctors to engage in therapy, we need to start pursing alternative methods that will actually treat the depression and not just keep it at bay. From all the research we've done and the several second opinions we've received, Ketamine Infusions seem to be the next step. These are not covered by insurance.
When does treatment start:
My first treatment was June 21st. It's too soon to tell what effect it will have, but our understanding is that for optimal effect, one goes through a loading phase of 6-8 treatments in a two week period, followed up by maintenance treatments every 6-8 weeks. At the clinic we've chosen to go with treatments are $400 each, but can range up for $600 each at other clinics.
How will the money I donate be used?:
Whatever is donated here will go directly towards paying for medical related causes for me. The main objective is to keep me around for those who feel my life is worthwhile, and help me understand it's worthwhile in the meantime.
Are there other ways I can help?
YES!!! If we live close to each other help with Althea or basic household and daily responsibilities are tremendously helpful. If we live far away a note of encouragement is supremely helpful.
Susan, isn't this super tacky to do a GoFundMe?!
YES!! It's mortifying to do this, but as a good friend pointed out, some people will want to help and financially may be the only way they can do that right now. As she put it "Give them the option to help you; don't take that away from the ones who love you."
