On Wednesday, November 6th the Kellar Family suffered a devastating traumatic accident.
While the rest of the family was away from home, their son Josh, who is a sophomore in high school and an aspiring chef was home with his two dogs. He wanted to cook dinner for his family. On the menu was fried chicken he wanted to prepare especially for his mom. While preparing the meal, a grease fire started in the kitchen.
When the flames started, Josh had a decision to make. Josh could have run out of the house saving himself, or stay in the house to put the fire out saving his family's home as well as their two dogs.
Josh made the heroic decision to stay and fight the fire. The fire quickly spread from the stove onto the kitchen floor. The fire on the floor was burning his feet and in the process of fighting the flames, Josh fell into the grease fire, resulting in a large area on his backside as well as multiple other places on his right arm and both legs being severely burned. Josh was able to get the fire out, saving his family home and pets, but in the process suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns over approximately 27% of his body.
Josh had to be flown by helicopter from Charlotte to a burn center ICU 90 miles from home and in understandable extreme pain. He is expected to be in the burn center for many weeks. Josh is facing a very long healing process with several surgeries in his future as well as multiple treatments and follow-ups back to the burn center. These follow-ups will require many hours of travel to and from the burn center so far from home.
Damage of the fire in the kitchen has resulted in the need to replace the hardwood floors, the stove he was cooking on, the microwave above the stove which melted from the heat and flames, damage to the cupboards underneath the stove as well as smoke damage to the ceiling.
At this point, it is unclear as to how much if any of the family's homeowners insurance and/or medical insurance will pay. There will also be financial needs related to the cost of the travel that will be required for the long drives back and forth from their home to the burn center.
During this time, many of us as friends are looking for ways to let the Kellars know we are here for them. This “GoFundMe” account is one way we can reduce a small amount of the stress and turmoil the family is currently enduring. Please consider joining us in helping make a difference, one dollar at a time!
Any financial help you can provide for the family would be very much appreciated.
