This fundraiser is for Kelly Horvath and her family. Funds will be used to cover medical expenses, living necessities, and travel costs.
On February 19, 2023, Kelly slipped on the ice. As a result of this fall, she suffered from a spiral fracture on her fibula, and fractured her talus in two places. She was told to wait a week for the swelling to decrease before she would have an appointment the following Monday, the 27th. This appointment would be for a surgery consultation, as doctors predicted she would need plates and screws to heal her leg.
On February 26, 2023, Kelly's family called an ambulance to respond to Kelly as she lost consciousness and began to seize. While they were waiting for the ambulance, Kelly regained consciousness. The only thing she spoke about was feeling nauseous, and, in true Kelly fashion, that a furniture bill needed to be paid.
Kelly was then taken by ambulance to the River Falls Emergency Room. She had a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot that traveled from her leg to her lungs. While she was still conscious and her vitals were quickly dropping, an intraosseous infusion was used to insert clot-busting medication. Her husband and children could hear her screams from the waiting area as they drilled a hole into the center marrow of her tibia/shin bone. These screams were the last vocalizations her family heard from her. While she was in the emergency room, her pulse was lost twice. A LUCAS chest compression system was used for several minutes desperately trying to bring her back to life. Dan was brought back first to hold her lifeless hand and say goodbye to his wife, and then Danell and Keldan were brought back to say goodbye to their mom who was flopping mercilessly to compressive blows of the LUCAS system.
After her pulse was regained a second time, she was rushed to United Hospital in the Twin Cities, MN where she would be hooked up to a life support system called ECMO. When Emergency medical staff was implementing the ECMO, uncontrollable bleeding from her femoral artery began where the ECMO was connected to Kelly. As of today (03/05), Kelly has received more than 80 quarts of blood as a result of this. Kelly was transferred from one emergency room in the Twin Cities to another. Throughout the first night (02/26 to 02/27), Kelly's pulse was lost three times. She had a seizure, multiple strokes, and multiple heart attacks.
She has been in the same hospital since February 27. She is currently in the Cardiovascular ICU, where she is expected to be for weeks. She has received steady sedation and pain medicine, as her body is extremely weak and needs to heal. She is currently on a ventilator. She is in stable condition while on this life support. Once she is stable and strong enough, staff plan to perform neuroimaging to assess cognitive functioning and brain damage. After she is in the ICU, medical staff expect her to spend months in the hospital recovering.
