Kelowna Community Fridge
Donation protected
Kelowna Community Fridge is a mutual aid project located on the ancestral and unceded lands of the Syilx Okanagan Nation aimed at addressing food equity by helping those facing food insecurity access free, fresh, and nutritious food 24/7, no questions asked.
According to Vancouver Coastal Health, a 2016 study found that 11.8% of British Columbians could be considered food insecure. This statistic does not account for the toll the COVID-19 pandemic has also taken on communities and access to food security. Community Food Centres Canada (CFC) has estimated that 1 in 7 Canadians have experienced food insecurity during the pandemic.
Where is the money going towards?
Our goal for this fundraiser is to have the money to set up and maintain a clean, safe, stocked, and accessible fridge and pantry space for those who need fresh food.
Your donation will go towards
- Pantry and shed building materials
- Helping us purchase food and cleaning supplies as we need them
- Maintenance costs
- Purchasing additional fridges and freezers for other locations in the future
Where will the fridge be located?
The first fridge will be located at Kelowna Unitarians on Bertram Street in Downtown Kelowna! We hope to have more fridges in other areas in the future.
What is a community fridge?
A community fridge is a mutual aid space where community members can access food 24/7, no questions asked. Community fridge initiatives offer residents an opportunity to support their neighbours through donations of physical goods, including food and hygiene items. Another benefit of community fridges is the ability to minimize food waste through redistribution to those that need it. Community fridges function as participatory neighbour-to-neighbour led initiatives where members of the community can actively care for one another. Everyone deserves food security and access to basic necessities.
Thank you for reading, caring, and supporting this project! We look forward to your support in making Kelowna a community where we take responsibility in caring for one another.
