Hello! I am Kristine and Kelsey is my little sister ~ To support her journey of healing we are asking for friends and family - who are able - to contribute to Kelsey's past, present and future medical and rehab costs.
THE BACK STORY
She is diagnosed with Cauda Equina Syndrome, a spinal cord injury.
{CES is a rare disorder that can result in issues with lower extremity function including bowel and bladder due to spinal nerves being compressed.}
Kelsey's story starts in December when her low back pain escalated very quickly, radiating down her leg and numbing her toes.
All it took was tucking a sheet under her mattress!
After the MRI, it was clear Kelsey's only option was to surgically remove the severely herniated disc.
Prepared as she could be, she woke up after the first surgery and things didn't seem quite right; 28 hours later Kelsey went in for a second surgery on the other side of the disc.
On February 5th, Kelsey had a third emergency surgery; removing more herniated disc and fusing her lower spine.
The Cost of Rehab Road
Kelsey will be out of work for at least 6 weeks. She is not allowed to drive at this time, and will require physical therapy for many months.
Kelsey is wearing a back brace, walking every day, and taking it minute by minute. Some days are good, some days are not as good.
Kelsey's health insurance has met it's maximum. She is required to pay her deductible ($2,500), co pays ($60 a visit), out-of-pocket expense (set by the insurance company is $6,300), physical therapy (est. out of pocket $8000), and other assistive items like orthotics, shoes, pillows, TENS unit, braces, canes, etc.
She is also considering a different vehicle that is easier to get in and out of.
Kelsey has had great success with acupuncture in regaining function (est. cost $4000).
Thankfully, Kelsey's wonderful husband, Karl, has been able to provide all in-home support. This saves them from paying for at home care. He has been helping Kelsey, as well as attending to their young daughter's needs, while still working full time.
We all know Kelsey will put in EXTRA time and effort to accomplish her goals, no matter how long it may take.
We only ask for donations from persons who are able; and we ask for love, light, letters, and kindness from all.
