Ken Reed (Mr. Reed) Wheelchair Ramp

As most of you are aware, my dad (also known by many as Mr Reed) survived a life-threatening stroke back at the beginning of August. While we are ecstatic about dad being able to return home, we are also aware of the many challenges facing his recovery and taking the necessary steps to overcome them and continue his upward progress! We are reaching out to all those who have had the opportunity to know and love my dad to help him continue his recovery by assisting him with the purchase and instalment of a wheelchair ramp at his home.

We are currently neck deep in the world of at-home therapy appointments, becoming 24/7 family caregivers, and trying to look ahead at what will be needed to give my dad the best chance of recovery. We were informed this past Monday that Medicare would only pay for in-home therapy for another month. At the moment, the only way he can have any time out of the house is by arranging medical transport (usually $500 a trip and not covered by insurance) that has a “stair chair” to move him up safely and down the stairs when he has an appointment with a specialist or to get a CT scan.

The original plan was to save up to buy the ramp out of pocket and use the funds from home modification grants for more extensive projects needed to make the home safe and accessible. After being told that the in-home therapies would be ending within the next month, we realised that a ramp would need to be installed much sooner than expected to begin transitioning to outpatient therapies.
