Students from Kenya Travel to USA

StartUpAfrica, a Delaware-based organization is partnering with University of Delaware to offer a truly remarkable opportunity to high-school age students in Africa. Through the Diamond Challenge Africa for high school entrepreneurs program, youth develop new business ideas, gain valuable knowledge & skills, and compete for a share of the Challenge’s prize pool.

For the 2018 global competition, three teams from Kenya are traveling and they need your assistance. The teams are from:

Kajire Girls High School (Taita Taveta County): will present their technology solution for keeping elephants off from encroaching human settlements where they kill people and destroy food crops.

Maria Soti Girls Educational Center (Elgeyo Marakwet County): will present their invention of a multipurpose "jiko", stove, that addresses colossal wastage of heat energy and its by-product, smoke from fuels such as wood.

Ken Obura High School (Kisumu County): will present their assistive input technology device for people who are disabled and have limited use of their hands.

For the teams to get to the US for the competition, they need air tickets, accommodation and other support during their 10 days. We are asking you to make a donation to help us give these high school students a chance to make it to the competition. You could also opt to donate towards seed capital to support the implementation of the students' ideas when they return to Kenya.

This is an ongoing fund to support the students' upcoming trip, giving seed capital and also expanding the program to reach more schools in East Africa during the 2018-2019 program year.

Every amount matters and will help towards reaching our goal and making an impact to many students. You can donate via:

“Six years into hosting the Diamond Challenge Africa initiative in Kenya, five years in Uganda and one year in Tanzania, we have not only seen a positive transformation of the students who have participated, but also the high level of innovative ideas that they are coming up with,” said Erastus Mong’are, Executive Director, StartUpAfrica. “Ours is to equip these youth from an early age with skills that they can use to turn into job creators to help fight the rampant unemployment problem in Africa.”
