Kerr’s All Terrain Wheelchair

Donation protected

Most people take for granted the ability to
take a walk through the woods or a trip to
the beach. However, for Kerr who is 8 and
has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, this
isn’t just as easy. Kerr relies on a wheelchair
for distances and so a walk in the woods is
impossible with his current manual
wheelchair due to rough terrain. This is
such a shame as we have great woods at
the end of our street.  A trip to the beach
would have to be considered and planned
very carefully due to access and he would
have to get out of his chair on the sand and walk - it is very difficult for someone with
Kerr’s condition to walk on sand. His
current manual wheelchair will go on to
the sand but can’t be pushed along, and so a trip to the beach means staying at the
very start. He can’t freely explore and
relies on being carried by us to reach the
water, not easy as he gets older.

We have found a great lightweight
all-terrain power wheelchair that would
give him the chance to take a trip to the
beach or the woods for granted, just like
everyone else. To not have to be anxious
about whether he will get stuck in the sand. Itwill  also give him the independence to
move around freely and not rely on
someone to push him, to be able to play
with his friends outdoors without having a parent push him along - it would quite
simply, be life changing for him.

As a family, we have fundraised extensively for the charity MDUK to help fund
research into finding treatments for
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and we arenow asking for help in fundraising for this wheelchair just for Kerr. The wheelchair
will cost in the region of £14500 by the
time we add the accessories that Kerr will need to make it suitable for him and we are
able to cover part of the cost ourselves but sadly, not it all. So we are asking that if you are able to donate even a small amount
towards it, or would like to take on a
challenge to raise something towards it,
then please do. We would be so grateful
for any help at all and Kerr’s quality of life would be greatly enhanced by the
independence  and inclusion it will offer
him.
