Dear Friends, this is something I never thought I would have to write, 7 months ago my sister Christina's’ life changed in a way that was unimaginable. In their home, her husband Kevin had a freak accident that could have happened to any of us. He fell down their basement stairs and hit his head resulting in a traumatic brain injury (TBI) among other injuries. Since then, Kevin has undergone 2 brain surgeries. He spent weeks in the ICU, transitioned to a regular hospital room, then in August he was accepted and transferred into a highly specialized TBI rehabilitation facility in Upstate NY.
There, Kevin has been receiving wonderful care in a multitude of therapies. The doctors have said, and we’ve seen it for ourselves, that he has made great strides in his recovery, and we are optimistic he will continue to do so. However, as with most brain injuries, only time will tell. But if you know Kevin, you know how hard he works and how determined he can be. So, we are hopeful he continues to recover and can return home to his family soon.
If you also know Kevin, you know how much his family means to him. He misses Christina, Joey, and Gracie so much and his absence has been extremely difficult for everyone, but our amazing family has been here the entire time and we have supported them in the best way we can.
I would also like to take this time to thank you, the community. The way everyone has banded together to help my sister has blown me away. Thank you to those who have reached out to us and who have donated their time, support, or via GoFundMe. Clearly Kevin has not been able to work and is on Disability. With your help Christina was able to retain a lawyer to obtain Medicaid for Kevin. Medicaid covers most of the costs that are not covered by traditional health insurance, but it does not cover all of it and Christina is left to pay the difference.
In times like this you don’t know what to say or do but you want and can help. Please know how grateful I, my sister, my parents, and Kevin’s sister Kealey are for your support. Also, if anyone would like to reach out to him, please let me know. Thank you.
