At the end of 2021, my sister Laura Haering and her husband Kevin were in what appeared to be a minor automobile accident. Unfortunately, the impact was enough that it ended up causing the wires in his chest, from an old defibrillator/pacemaker, to puncture his left lung. Despite experiencing symptoms shortly after the accident, it was almost five months before doctors had a clear picture of what had happened. By then, it was a life-threatening situation. Over the next three months in the hospital, Kevin's stay included two surgical procedures to repair the damage to his lung and eventually remove the old pacemaker wires from his heart. These procedures required a medically induced coma, multiple bedside procedures in the CICU, feeding tubes, a tracheostomy, a mountain of medications, and more. Once he was stable, Kevin was released to a rehabilitation hospital to learn how to swallow, eat, walk, and do all those things we take for granted. Now that he is finally home, there will be no less than a year of physical therapy and rehabilitation. It is unclear when Kevin will be able to work again. We're hoping to raise some money to provide financial stability through his complete recovery. Any amount will help.
