Kevin Rumley is getting a doctorate!

If you're reading this, you've likely seen, or felt in your own life, the very special magic that is Kevin Rumley and so you won't be the least bit surprised to learn that Kevin has been accepted into a really unique Doctorate in Social Work program at the University of Tennessee. What I think is so exciting about this program is that it means he'll be able to continue doing the vital work that he does as program director of the Veterans Treatment Court of Buncombe County. This DSW program at UT has a strong clinical focus; it is incredibly selective and most accepted candidates have a decade or more of experience in their field... which is why it's so amazing (but not at all surprising) that Kevin has been accepted and now has this opportunity.

As a doctorate in social work program and not a Ph.D program (and as a program designed for folks in the process of saving the world) this one does not offer assistantships or opportunities to fund one's education by teaching.  Kevin is so excited about what this means for himself professionally and for the people that he serves, that he is totally prepared to borrow the $50,000 in tuition and expenses required. It was my idea, as his pushy sister-in-law, to pass the hat around first, because it's Kevin... who could deserve this more and who could ever do more with it?

From Kevin:

'In the field of Social Work, a Masters in Social Work (MSW) is the terminal degree which allows for licensure to practice.  Albeit, the DSW is quickly becoming the new benchmark for the Social Work field.  This would open doors of opportunity on the national scale, allowing me to shape policy on Recovery Courts and other harm reduction efforts.

During my application process, I highlighted my clinical interest in working to support justice-involved veterans.  Specifically, I am interested in the implications of a nervous-system/trauma-informed court and how this historically oppressive structure/system can better serve historically disenfranchised communities. Shaping national policy on the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP) is a future goal.  But I would also be content to simply improve service-delivery within the Buncombe County Veterans Treatment Court (www.buncombeveteranscourt.com)'

Thank you thank you thank you for reading and for sharing!!
