Kevin's kidney transplant expenses
Donation protected
Hello,
My name is Kevin McConnell. Please allow me to give you my backstory. I married the love of my life 20+ years ago. Her name is Colleen. Together we have 2 boys; Myles age 12 and Marshall age 9. By the grace of God, both boys are healthy, active in sports, and maintain good grades in school. I have been coaching both basketball and baseball for two different teams since the boys started playing at age 5. I have developed caring relationships with the boys on my teams and enjoy the many hours required to help these boys learn how to play the game they love with passion, sportsmanship, and a feeling of family on our teams.
Now the bad; two years ago I was diagnosed with a rare disease called IGA Nephropathy. This disease attacks kidney function and I am now in “End Stage Renal Failure”. A year and a half ago I started dialysis, but have managed to keep working full time and coaching both teams. I was placed on the transplant list in April of 2015 and I’m still waiting for the blessed day that I get that call. In the meantime I have to concern myself with the fact that dialysis, although it is keeping me alive, is extremely expensive. I have insurance that takes care of the majority of the expenses; however the treatments and additional medications cost me significantly each month. You can’t put a price on what keeps a person alive, but you can put a price on what drives a person into the poorhouse. We do the best we can but an expense like this requires a lot of juggling and payment arrangements. That alone would be enough for me to seek assistance, but my real concern is the cost to come with surgery.
The surgery to transplant a kidney is expensive, and insurance naturally covers only 80%. That leaves me with a large expense at the same time I will be off work for 3 months during recovery. We have depleted all savings that we had and I am afraid that we will not be able to keep up payments during my recovery. Our home is the only one our boys have ever known and it would be devastating to lose this house. We have already started eliminating debts. We sold my wife’s car as she works from home as a daycare provider and it is not a necessity. We have made all the adjustments that we can at this point and now we are forced to ask for help.
I know times are tough for many and letting go of your hard earned money is hard. All I can do is assure you it is not going to someone that is living off the system. Any donation you can manage will add up to a blessing for my family. Remember that there are thousands of people across the nation that are in desperate need of organ transplants. Please take time to discuss with your loved ones about getting registered as an organ donor. You could LITERALLY save someone’s life. Thank you in advance,
Kevin Mcconnell
