Kingfield Community Outdoor Oven
Donation protected
The Kingfield Neighborhood Association (KFNA) is building an outdoor bread/pizza oven on rented land adjacent to our Pleasant Community Garden as a way to further build community in our neighborhood! Essentially creating a new community gathering location, the oven will be used for regular public events hosted by KFNA that bring neighbors together to share food, learn new skills, and build connections to each other.
We are fundraising at only $10 per brick! If each brick (1100) has a donor we will meet our $11,000 goal! All funds raised through this campaign will be used to cover the material cost of the structure (close to $7000 in cement, insulation, lumber, and brick), to provide our on-site coordinator with a stipend for leading the project, to purchase tools for the oven, and (if we meet our goal) to plan for service counters to be added to the oven area next summer to serve as public gathering spaces and classroom space.
Volunteers have spent the last two months building the foundation and hearth for the oven. Almost 200 volunteer hours has gone into the project already and we hope to be operational yet this fall! The final steps of the oven involve constructing a brick housing with a chimney around the entire structure and building a fireproof door. Encased in mottled red brick, the oven will look essentially like the 100 year old building it is housed at, a former convent and current home to the Center for Performing Arts, at the intersection of 38th Street and Pleasant Avenue in South Minneapolis.
