Khalil Adams's heart transplant medical expenses
Donation protected
Khalil D. Adams is a 27-year old vibrant, Iowa native heart failure patient. He is hospitalized in Iowa City for an indefinite amount of time while he awaits a heart transplant donor. He may be required to stay for additional weeks or months following the surgery.
This gofundme is created to help address the monthly bills and family expenses associated with Khalil’s hospitalization before and after his surgery. This will ease Khalil’s and his family’s financial strain during his hospitalization.
Khalil is the son of Tinika Roland and Desmund Adams. He attended Des Moines Public Schools and Des Moines Area Community College. If you met him, you know the impact he has on others.
You may have heard a part of his story before when former WHO 13 Journalist, Jodi Long first shared Khalil’s story titled “The Biggest Heart” in 2018. The title of the story describes Khalil in many ways. Khalil has been an inspiration to many and his goal is to return to living independently with the gift of a new heart.
In March 2017, at the young age of 21, Khalil found himself struggling to breathe. After his visit to the ER, multiple tests, being placed in a “LifeVest” and then a transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital, Khalil was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy. This is known as an enlarged heart. Khalil’s journey did not stop there; during that year, he also received a subcutaneous ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator), suffered a large stroke, and had open-heart surgery to implant an LVAD/heart pump by June 6, 2017.
As of September 26, 2022, Khalil’s cardiovascular team found an additional complication with his heart, possibly a thrombus (blood clot). The goal is to prevent another stroke and reduce complications with his LVAD. The decision was made to monitor him closely while in the University of Iowa Hospital until he is able to receive “A Gift of Life” in the form of a heart transplant.
Follow Khalil’s journey to a heart transplant and support him back to health. Thank you in advance for all the love and support of our “Biggest Heart.”
