The slum's atmosphere is thick with the pollutants of human refuse, garbage, soot, dust, and various waste, resulting in a dangerous breeding ground for diseases including HIV/AIDS, malaria, typhoid fever, and cholera. Open sewage systems run through the streets, contaminating homes and streets alike with both human and animal waste.

Alarming unemployment rates and extreme poverty have pushed over a million people into these dire circumstances. For many, essential healthcare is an unaffordable luxury, further exacerbating their challenges.

Children, Hunger, and Education: The Core of Our Initiative
