Kids Learn at Home

Housing Help Inc. wants to help make a difference for students and their families through our “Kids Learn at Home” book project. “Distance Learning” in the age of Covid-19 has exposed limitations.  It disproportionally fails to meet the needs of children who lack technology and access to the internet. Many of the families who are shut out of distance learning also have a lack of children’s’ books in their homes. This  limits the opportunities for their children to engage with books and read for enjoyment. Housing Help Inc. hopes to fill that gap by providing age appropriate books for children in grades Pre-K through 6.

Housing Help Inc. will purchase new books from Book Revue in Huntington Village and distribute them to families through St. Hugh of Lincoln’s food distribution site in Huntington Station. The pilot program began on May 11th, and the smiles and gratitude were abundant. It was made clear that there is a real need for these resources, and with your help this demand can be fulfilled.

Our “Kids Learn at Home” project is not intended to replace instruction that school districts are required to provide to students. However, the quantity and quality of distance instruction varies widely and marginalizes specific populations.  Our goal is to supplement formal educational efforts so that these children, who can least afford to miss regular schooling, have at least some enjoyable reading material at home.

Housing Help Inc. continues to work with local organizations and local businesses while helping support “Kids Learn at Home” and advocate for equity in distance learning opportunities for all children.
