Descripción del proyecto

“Kids of Kibera y el secuestro del Sol” es una película de fantasia y aventuras sobre el poder de la comunidad pero también es mucho más que eso: es un proyecto cinematográfico en el que la imaginación de sus creadores y protagonistas es la principal herramienta de cambio.

El proyecto nace con ”Kings and Queens of Kibera”, una pequeña casa de acogida de niños y niñas de la calle en Kibera, Kenia; el suburbio más grande de África. La casa de acogida, que lleva activa desde 2006, ha recibido cuatro generaciones de niños y niñas de la comunidad local. Desde entonces, decenas de profesionales relacionados con el mundo del arte y la interpretación (Alba Flores; Mason Chesler; Shawn Burgess; Nico Mallol; Djuneid Dulloo; Marina Gatell) se han involucrado en la comunidad impartiendo talleres, organizando cursos, etc.

Fue en uno de ellos cuándo surgió la iniciativa de hacer una película para mostrar cuál es la fantasía en sus contextos y qué soluciones de futuro nacen de ellos y ellas. Por eso, la co-creación y la participación horizontal son la columna vertebral de este proyecto. También que los niños y niñas de Kibera vivan la experiencia como un proceso de disfrute y aprendizaje con un sólido acompañamiento profesional y humano.

En este proyecto se han implicado diversos agentes y personalidades del mundo de la cultura. Entre ellas Alba Flores, actriz, productora, activista y todo un icono en Kenya por su personaje de Nairobi en La Casa de Papel. Los niños y niñas de Kibera se pusieron en contacto con ella proponiéndole formar parte de la película como embajadora, productora e interpretando un pequeño papel.

Quiénes somos

Este es el primer proyecto de la organización “Fiction for Change” una organización internacional que promueve el cambio sistémico a través de la ficción.

Las imágenes son el gran canal de comunicación de nuestro tiempo y contar historias a través de ellas, un lenguaje universal que llega a todos los niveles. Por eso, llevamos a cabo talleres con niños y niñas en situación de vulnerabilidad en los que les enseñamos a utilizar el lenguaje audiovisual como herramienta transformadora.

Este proceso de aprendizaje desemboca en películas con impacto circular: los beneficios del film se convertirán en un fondo auto-gestionado por la comunidad y que cubrirá las necesidades básicas de sus protagonistas (educación, alimentación, hogar).

Creemos en la fantasía como herramienta de acción colectiva

Sinopsis

Un grupo de niñas y niños de un hogar de acogida en Kibera (Kenia), observan cada tarde cómo el Sol se pone detrás de la última casa del horizonte. Un día el Sol no sale.

El Sol ha sido secuestrado por un grupo de villanos que quieren comercializar con la energía solar. Como la pandilla sabe dónde está, se embarca en una aventura trepidante para intentar rescatarlo.

Conscientes de cómo las dinámicas norte-sur han explotado los recursos del Sur Global a niveles tanto simbólicos como materiales, este largometraje es una propuesta comprometida que busca acabar con esa inercia y entrelazar sus narrativas en el centro del discurso. Así, la independencia económica de “Kids of Kibera y el secuestro del Sol” es clave para asegurar la co-creación colectiva a lo largo de todo el proceso, el compromiso y horizontalidad con la comunidad (60% del equipo técnico, de dirección y rodaje local); el compromiso cultural y humano de la producción (los actores y actrices son los mismos niños que crearon el guión, se grabará en su lengua materna, persona experta en mediación y adaptación cultural durante el rodaje, etc) y la calidad artística. Además buscamos trascender y generar una comunidad de personas que apuesten por la ficción como herramienta transformadora y que busquen películas comprometidas capaces de abordar diferentes contextos con mirada crítica, intercultural y sensible.

La transparencia y la participación son fundamentales y el desglose de los recursos se actualizarán de manera trimestral.

Project Description

"Kids of Kibera and the Kidnapped Sun" is a fantasy and adventure film about the power of community, but it is also much more than that: it is an educational film project where the imagination of its creators and protagonists is the main tool for change.

The project originates with "Kings and Queens of Kibera," a small foster home for street children in Kibera, Kenya, the largest slum in Africa. The foster home, which has been active since 2006, has hosted four generations of children from the local community. Since then, dozens of professionals related to the world of art and performance (Alba Flores; Mason Chesler; Shawn Burgess; Nico Mallol; Djuneid Dulloo; Marina Gatell…) have become involved in the community by conducting workshops, organizing courses, etc.

It was in one of these workshops that the initiative to make a film emerged, to show what fantasy is in their contexts and what future solutions arise from them. That is why co-creation and horizontal participation are the backbone of this project. It is also essential that the children of Kibera experience this as a process of enjoyment and learning with solid professional and human support.

Various agents and personalities from the cultural world have been involved in this project. Among them is Alba Flores, actress, producer, activist, and a true icon in Kenya for her character “Nairobi” in “Money Heist". The children of Kibera contacted her, proposing that she be part of the film as an ambassador, producer, and also to play a small role.

Who We Are

This is the first project of the organization "Fiction for Change," an international organization that promotes systemic change through fiction.

Images are the greatest communication channel of our time, and storytelling through them is a universal language that reaches all levels. That is why we conduct workshops with vulnerable children, teaching them to use audiovisual language as a transformative tool.

This learning process leads to films with a circular impact: the benefits from the film will become a self-managed fund by the community, covering the basic needs of its protagonists (education, food, housing).

We believe in fantasy as a tool for collective action.

Synopsis

A group of children from a foster home in Kibera (Kenya) watch every evening as the sun sets behind the last house on the horizon. One day, the sun doesn't rise.

The sun has been kidnapped inside that house by a group of villains who want to commercialize solar energy. Since the kids know where it is, they embark on a thrilling adventure to try to rescue it.

Why Crowdfunding?

Aware of how North-South dynamics have exploited the resources of the Global South on both symbolic and material levels, this feature film is a committed proposal that seeks to end this inertia and weave its narratives into the center of the discourse. Thus, the economic independence of "Kids of Kibera and the Kidnapping of the Sun" is key to ensuring collective co-creation throughout the entire process, commitment and horizontality with the community (60% of the technical, directing, and filming team is local); the cultural and human commitment of the production (the actors are the same children who created the script, it will be filmed in their mother tongue, with an expert in mediation and cultural adaptation during the filming, etc.), and the artistic quality. Additionally, we seek to transcend and create a community of people who believe in fiction as a transformative tool and who seek committed films capable of addressing different contexts with a critical, intercultural, and sensitive perspective.
