Kids Count Building Campaign

Adrienne Classen, MD and a few intrepid staff members started Kids Count Pediatrics, PLLC from scratch in rural northwestern North Carolina in 2006 specifically to embody the Medical Home model of providing care for children and families. In 2011, Kids Count Pediatrics received our Level III medical home certification from NCQA . The practice has grown from one pediatrician and three staff members to 3 pediatric care providers, a full time mental and behavioral health therapist, occupational therapy and speech therapy as well as a speech pathologist one day a week and six support staff.
In addition to healthy kids, we work closely with Wake Forest University Brenner Children’s hospital and pull children with chronic illness, special needs, medical fragility, school and mental health issues from 10 rural North Carolina and 2 rural Virginia counties. Our patient complexity is over twice state average. Compared to other practices of our size with a similar patient complexity, we save Medicaid between $750,000 and a million dollars yearly in decreased hospitalizations and Emergency Room bounce backs: approximately 25% per each child we see. Unfortunately, because Medicaid pays so poorly (50 to 60 cents on the dollar compared to private insurance and 70 to 80 cents on the dollar compared to Medicare), we often struggle to make ends meet. As of January 1st when the government did not renew the Medicaid Pay Parity act , the practice is losing $3000 a week in revenue.
We are currently seeking a first round of funding in the amount of $300,000 to purchase land to build an office that would embody and expand our mission. Once the land is secured, we will seek a second round of financing to cover the costs of the construction of the building. This building will provide increased room for services, parenting classes, support groups and meetings as well as expanding what we can offer for children. Currently, no pool in our catchment area accepts Medicaid for pool therapy for children with cerebral palsy and paralysis. Also, no playground with adaptive equipment exists so that kids confined to wheelchairs can get on a swing. We would like to change that.
Please help us in our ongoing mission to make the world a better place for kids.
