Kilbarron N.S Ballyshannon: Runs around Ireland
Donation protected
Kilbarron National School is a small school of 32 children. We are currently working towards our 2nd Active School Flag and our 1st Amber School Flag this year. As a school we have decided to take on the Run Around Ireland Initiative. The children and staff in our school are taking on the challenge to walk/run the 3,710km coastline of Ireland. We are taking on this challenge to raise money to fund a sensory garden for our school.
A Sensory garden is a collection of plants and materials with different textures, shapes, colours, scents and heights. The collection of plants and materials is laid out in such a way as to stimulate our senses; seeing, hearing, smelling, touching and tasting. Sensory gardens can also be therapeutic offering a lovely place to escape to, to take time-out and simply relax, listen to flowing water or just feel the leaves. Most gardens offer visual appeal, but a sensory garden gives a bit more as it is primarily designed to stimulate the senses. For children with special needs a sensory garden can also be a safe and tactile environment to enjoy, touching, hearing, smelling and seeing the plants and natural materials.
The children have measured out the school yard and pitch and have worked out that 8 laps = 1km. The children are running daily to clock up their kilometres and every Friday both the Junior and Senior classrooms will complete a 3-5km walk around our local area, socially distancing of course. To both encourage and motivate the children further, we have painted the map of Ireland that covers the length and breadth of our school pitch. Each week we will mark out on the map the distance they have ran/walked to help the children visualise their progress.
Through both our Go Fund Me page and on our school Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/Kilbarronschool/, we will post regular updates as we travel around Ireland visiting many of the famous landmarks along the way.
We would really appreciate any donations no matter how big or small to recognise and support the effort the children are putting in, in taking on their challenge to run around Ireland.
