On March 29, 2025 we lost a beloved part of our family. On a routine hike that we have walked hundreds of times, tragedy struck. Kilo was slightly in front of me when he noticed some movement not too far from my ankle. He went to investigate by sticking his snout in the brush near the trail. Without warning he was bitten by a rattlesnake. He jumped up and the rattle snake began to rattle his tail in an attack position. I took off running down the mountain. Knowing time was of the essence, I frantically raced to my car. I called friends and family for help, in search of antivenin. Luckily my friend found a pet hospital that had some not too far from the trail. As I zoomed to the veterinarian Kilo started to feel the effects of the poison running through his veins. Kilo climbed into my lap while I was driving as I kept praying and telling him he will be okay. My heart began to break as I saw him physically in pain with a high fever and face severely swollen. We arrived to the hospital and they administered the antivenin. Two hours later they gave me a call telling me that the first dose of antivenin should've helped with his fever but it kept rising so they administered a second dose. Hours past and we prayed for his recovery… Finally the doctor called us in to deliver the devastating news. The swelling was not going down, his temperature was still really high. He explained to us that he had a very slim chance of making it. The vet said it would be best if we euthanized him.
I held him close in his final moments telling him how much I loved him. I held him close telling him how much he mean't to me. I thanked him for being a blessing in my life. Kilo gave me strength and comfort. He reminded me to remain in the present moment. Kilo loved hikes, the snow, the beach, any adventure that involved outdoors. He was adventurous, kind, loving, caring, and humorous! He was a great companion. He disliked fireworks, showers, and mean dogs. He was a funny character and brought joy to everyone. I'm deeply heartbroken. Kilo was my baby, my best friend, my everything.
It's taking an immense amount of courage to share my story and ask for support. Im taking this step for myself and for Kilo. Im sharing this tragedy to bring awareness of protecting your pet from rattlesnakes.
I love you Kilo, you will forever be in my heart.
Thank You friends, family, and community for your support.
