My beautiful best friend Kim Davis was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt Jacobs Disease in December of 2020. Creutzfeldt Jacobs Disease is a degenerative brain disorder that is extremely rare and progresses rapidly and aggressively. Symptoms of this disease that Kim is experiencing include abnormal jerking movement, loss of balance and coordination, slurred speech, loss of intellect and memory and progressive loss of brain function and mobility. This sporadic disease occurs at a rate of 1 case per 1 million people worldwide. Regrettably, there is no cure due to the rarity of this terrible disease. The life expectancy from the onset of symptoms is 6-12 months.
Kim’s symptoms began back in July of 2020 and the doctors believed she had experienced a stroke. As her symptoms progressed and her health began to rapidly decline, she endured endless painful procedures, hospital stays and testing which led to the discovery that she had inherited the gene for Creutzfeldt Jacobs Disease. As you can imagine, this news is beyond devastating. This has taken such a toll on Kim and her family, mentally, physically, emotionally and financially.
While trying to cope with this tragic news, Kim was faced with the death of her beloved mother Sheila French. Sheila passed away peacefully on December 29, 2020.
Kim is a devoted wife to her loving husband Tony Davis. When they married years ago, the two blended their beautiful families together and began their new journey. They share five beautiful children, Devin, 25, Pannel, 25, Armani, 17, Kiara 14 and Airiel, 9. Their son Devin has Autism and Kim and Tony are his main providers and support system. The challenges they are facing are simply unimaginable.
Tony and Kim worked tirelessly and were successful at improving their financial standing in order to better their life together and afford their children with the best life possible. The two were in the process of looking for their new home in Attleboro, MA. Due to these unforeseen circumstances the couples down payment and savings have been entirely depleted. The financial impact of her mother’s passing, medical expenses, household bills and common life expenses has caused an enormous strain on her and her family. Her husband Tony recently has lost his employment due to Kim requiring full time care. The only option for Kim is palliative care which is going to add to the financial stress they are already experiencing.
Kim’s strength is unmatched. Her ability to constantly put herself aside for those she loves is truly remarkable. Kim has devoted her life to her husband and children, they come first, and they always will. Kim has put everyone before herself, it is just who she is. She is an incredible support to so many of us and a bright light we all so often need. No matter what obstacles and challenges she faces in life, she always finds the positives, looks to God, overcomes, and perseveres fearlessly. When Kim was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt Jacobs Disease, her first words were, “My kids, my husband.” No mention of herself or the pain she was feeling in that moment. Tony and Kim are faithful children of God. During this unthinkable time, they have stayed true to their faith. They have placed their faith in God and trust he will shelter them and guide them during this heartbreaking time.
One of the most profound moments of her selflessness was her desire to reach out to her estranged father. She told me she couldn’t leave this earth without telling her father she loved him. I encouraged her to do what she felt would give her peace to which she responded, “Oh, no, this isn’t about me, I can’t leave my father here with that guilt.” That was such a powerful moment and a true display of the selfless, loving and pure hearted woman Kim is.
Since the moment we met, we connected. There hasn’t been a single day in our relationship that has gone by without her being loving, loyal, honest and pure. I do not know what I did to ever deserve this beautiful woman in my life. She has loved me unconditionally and without judgment. She has been there for me in ways I can’t even begin to explain. Words cannot express my broken heart. Kim has been by my side every step of the way. She has cheered me on, lifted me up, supported me and loved me in a manner that no friend ever has. Kim started off as my friend and will leave this earth as my sister.
Tony will be forced to learn how to navigate a new life without his loving wife. He needs to maintain their home and become the sole provider for their children which is a struggle to say the least.
Kim’s one wish is that her children and husband are taken care of and do not endure any financial burden. The one promise I made to Kim is that I will always be there for her children and family. This is just the beginning of my efforts to keep that promise. My goal is to raise as much money as possible in order to lessen the endless challenges and pain her family is experiencing. To every person who reads this, know that you are loved and appreciated.
Due to Kim’s physical limitations and the emotional toll, I would encourage those wishing to reach out to do so via email at [email redacted]. While it is unlikely she will be able to respond, please know that they will be read, loved and appreciated.
