(updated as of 9/25/23):

On Sunday, September 10th, just 1 day after her 4th wedding anniversary, tragedy struck for Kim Smith and her loved ones. At approximately 7:00pm, she was shot with a shotgun by her husband, before he took his own life in their apartment. She had to be flown to Shock Trauma at UMMC in Baltimore. She has 2 significant gunshot wounds, one to her upper left arm, and one to her right hand. Her right thumb was shot off, and thankfully was able to be reattached. These are small blessings in a horrible tragedy. However, she will need months of physical therapy to recover and gain normal use of her hand and arm again. She is unable to cook, clean, drive, work, and complete normal daily tasks. In addition to the physical damage done, she will have a very long road ahead of her to recover mentally. She was not only shot and has to cope with the trauma of that, but she also has to deal with the reality of losing her husband to suicide. Those that have lost someone to suicide know the permanent scar that trauma leaves you.

As if all of those are not hard enough for a family to endure, there is the matter of the property and scene of the crime. Kim’s once beautiful home is now covered in constant reminders of the horrors she went through that night. There is blood, debris, and bullet holes in/on the floor, furniture, walls and all throughout. A particular team has to come in to remove certain items from their home, as well as clean up the scene due to the biological material that’s contaminated them. This task alone costs thousands of dollars and is not something that is covered by insurance. In addition to the removal of contaminated items, there will need to be drywall repair, painting, carpet removal, and general cleaning done all throughout.

All contributions will be used to help cover the costs of her extensive medical bills, family’s travel expenses, clean up/repairs, as well as general living expenses as Kim (and family) will be out of work for an unknown amount of time as they heal. Please help us ease some of the burden placed on this family by this unimaginable tragedy. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from this amazing community.
