Kim Porter’s Covid & Surgery Recovery

This is the only fundraiser for Kim Porter of North Carolina

I’m Kim Porter, and I’ve been a community organizer and public advocate for over 10 years.  Despite following strict safety guidelines, I contracted COVID-19 about 2 months ago, through no fault of my own. Things I once took for granted became very painful  or impossible.  The medical expenses started going up, and I had to miss almost 2 months of work.

While I was still recuperating and out back walking Dozer, he bolted after a squirrel, pulling me off my feet. He’s the little cutie in my lap in the photo. The emergency room doctor told me I broke my right ankle and pulled ligaments in my leg. This required surgery. They put a metal plate and seven screws in my lower leg, and the orthopedist says I can’t put any weight on it or drive for the next 7 weeks!

I’ve created gofundme pages for other people and never thought I would have to make one for myself.  It's embarrassing not be able to handle this. I work for a non profit and have health insurance, but as we know, our health system is broken, and well . . . here we are. 

My bills keep getting higher, and I’m getting further behind.  Trying to pay medical bills and expenses has drained what little savings I had.  I’m down to choosing between filling prescriptions and paying my electric bill.  

This is a place I never wanted to be in. I’m very independent. But after working with communities for years, I’ve seen the incredible power of love and the impact it has in changing people’s lives. Now I need help.

Please donate if you can.  My bills are continuing to pile up. I haven’t even seen what I owe for my surgery yet. Every bit helps. I promise to continue to “pay it forward” and keep organizing and uplifting others.
