The nation’s opioid crisis has left tens of thousands of children in danger.
Monica and Robert Kinder are among those doing something about it. They have adopted five girls - four of them sisters who weren't living together - and are fostering two babies. In total, they have fostered more than 20 kids over the last eight years.
This is not because they can easily afford to…
Robert commutes four hours round trip each day to work as a bulldozer operator at a coal mine. Monica has her hands full at home, fixing meals, helping with schoolwork and getting the kids where they need to be. They have forgone a lot of spending to make sure all the kids’ needs are met.
After their story aired on the Today show, there was a national outpouring of offers to help.
Watch their story here.
Unfortunately, much of that help didn't materialize. As the Kinders’ story faded from public view, old problems festered and new ones arose.
Monica recently invited a contractor to their home to estimate the cost of much-needed repairs. With seven people living in what started out as a two-bedroom house, there is plenty of work to be done.
• The kitchen needs to be enlarged to accommodate their growing family.
• Two rooms need to be converted to bedrooms and another for a playroom. (All require work from floor to ceiling.)
• Every bathroom needs a new vanity and three need new showers installed.
• Both the front door and a sliding door need to be replaced.
• Much of the house needs to be repainted.
• And most of the home needs new flooring.
• In addition, the Kinders could use a new washer and dryer, two beds, a couch, and several lights and fans.
The contractor’s estimate was $70,000.
The Kinders have sacrificed a lot to provide a loving home for these children. Their example is inspiring.
Let’s show them what the spirit of Christmas is all about…
