King Henry VIII School & Old Coventrians Association
Photograph Archive Appeal
King Henry VIII School in Coventry was founded in 1545 and is one of the City's oldest and most famous institutions. We have an extensive School Archive and we are keen to share artefacts online. We have thousands of photographs from the mid to late twentieth century which provide a history of post war Coventry as well as the daily life of pupils and masters.
I am delighted to be able to confirm on 4 March 2020 that the Old Coventrians Association have agreed to support the appeal and will receive all money raised into their bank account. I have agreed that in the event that the whole amount is not raised, the following will happen:
1. 6 months after the last donation was made;
2. I will offer to refund donations;
3. any remaining funds will be used to cover the cost of scanning photographs in order to create a searchable digital photographic archive accessible via the School computer network (as a donation from the OCA to the School Archive).
The appeal is for donations towards the cost of purchasing WhoZatFace, a new web service that enables schools and colleges to privately and securely crowdsource the tagging of faces in group photos. The initial set up fee is £860, plus VAT (£172), plus GoFundMe fees of 2.9% - an amended target of £1,062. The School will fund the annual licence fee.
It is hoped that not only former pupils of the School, but also those interested in genealogy and the history of Coventry, will see the benefit of this project and contribute to this one-off cost.
Please use the "gofundme" message facility to contact me with any queries. I would like to acknowledge the support of all donors on the Archive home page unless you wish to remain anonymous. If you make a donation and are interested in photographs from a particular year, please let me know and I will prioritise that year.
Here are some examples of the type of photographs in the Archive:
1st XV Rugby Team 1949-50
The finale of The Pirates of Penzance in 1955
Former Headmaster, Herbert Walker, in his office in 1974.
Helen Cooper (Old Coventrian, Class of 1975)
