Kinsale Teens Target Covid19 with 3D Technology

Students at Kinsale Community School are helping the fight to conquer the Coronavirus pandemic by producing vitally important PPE equipment for front-line workers. Full scale production of Protective Face Shields is currently underway 7 days a week in the school’s Microsoft Digital Hub.
Oisin Coyle 5th Year and Shane Collins TY came up with a design and produced their own protective face shield prototype two weeks ago on their own home 3D printers. The design was approved by HSE personnel and within days an assembly line was set up with 7 printers producing 28 masks a day.
The interest in the masks was so great that production had to be rapidly ramped up. Kinsale Lions Club sponsored a further 10 printers at a cost of 2000 euros. Now the output is 500 masks a day which are assembled by 3 students, a small number of teachers and are delivered to where they are needed by the local Gardai.
Production takes places 7 days a week including the Easter weekend. Printers are also programmed to continue production during the night.
1000’s of masks have gone to front line workers in care homes in Kinsale, CUH, Mercy Hospital Cork, University Hospital Kerry, Kinsale Community Hospital, Care Choice Nursing Home, SouthDoc Bandon, Cork fire brigade and to many others.
The masks are given out for free and nobody is paid a single cent for their time or expenses. If you require visors please contact us at [email redacted]
Raw materials of Perspex, binding covers and elastic were initially donated by businesses from near and far, local community contacts, family, teachers and friends. However the time has come to buy raw materials as orders for 100’s of masks arrive daily and our stocks are dwindling.
The school is in need of immediate funds to keep the supply chain for this selfless venture going.
