《 INTRODUCTION 》

Kintsugi connects people to their communities across the world through their shared cultural heritage, linking past and present generations through the restoration of cherished objects.

It’s with that thought in mind that we at Kintsugi atelier are hosting the world’s first Kintsugi installation at Nuit Blanche 2024!

We would love for your support in helping us fund this exhibit, so that we can spread the art of Kintsugi all across North America, and the world.

Your contributions will directly fund the creation of this unique, meaningful experience, allowing visitors to connect with Kintsugi and its message of resilience, healing, and beauty.

Additionally, for those looking to support this project in a different way, we have created a separate donation page offering unique items from Japan including rare 200-year-old Kintsugi works, which are difficult to obtain even in Japan.
To explore these special rewards, please visit the page below.

Project Overview

Title: Kintsugi: In Praise of Cultural Resilience
Date: October 5, 7 PM – October 6, 7 AM
Location: Cecil Community Centre 58 Cecil St. Toronto, ON

We are Kintsugica, a Kintsugi atelier in Canada. We are working to spread the art of Kintsugi, inspired by lessons from a teacher from Japan with 20 years of experience.

This project isn’t just an art exhibition—it’s a celebration of resilience, culture, and the beauty found in imperfection. By supporting this project, you’ll help us showcase the true spirit of Kintsugi and raise awareness about its cultural significance.

Your support will not only help make this historic event a reality but also preserve and promote an authentic cultural tradition that has endured for centuries.

(Even if we don’t reach our goal, the project will still take place. Every contribution helps us create a more impactful and meaningful experience, and your support will directly enhance the quality and scope of the exhibition.)

What is Kintsugi?

Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramic with natural material and gold, symbolizes resilience and the beauty of imperfection. As a traditional technique that has been practiced for over 500 years, Kintsugi holds a significant place in Japanese cultural heritage.

Our Project - “Kintsugi: In Praise of Cultural Resilience” at Nuit Blanche
Our project aims to celebrate the strength and cultural heritage of immigrants by displaying Kintsugi-repaired items along with their personal stories. This project aligns with the theme of this year's Nuit Blanche, "Bridging Distance," by connecting people through shared experiences and narratives.

Nuit Blanche

North America's largest contemporary art festival, attracts over 1 million visitors annually and generates $489 million in economic impact for Toronto, benefiting sponsoring companies supporting artists.

《 WHY IT'S IMPORTANT 》

This project holds great significance in many ways.

1. Introducing Kintsugi to a wider audience
Kintsugi, though still relatively unknown, will be introduced to a diverse audience. Kintsugi is not just a repair technique—it offers a unique perspective that combines artistic expression, healing, and deep philosophical insights. This kind of approach is something rarely seen before.

2. The world’s first Kintsugi installation exhibition
This project marks a historic moment as the first-ever Kintsugi installation. It goes beyond traditional exhibits by creating an immersive space where visitors can engage with the deeper meaning behind Kintsugi.

3. Celebrating cultural resilience and multiculturalism
The exhibition will highlight the stories of immigrants and their strength, symbolizing the resilience of cultural heritage. It also reflects the unique multiculturalism that makes Canada, and Toronto in particular, a special place where cultures blend and thrive together.

4. A Space Rich in Cultural History
Cecil Community Centre has served various cultural communities throughout its history. Originally built as a church, it was later transformed into a synagogue, then used as a Chinese Catholic center, and even as the first home of Toronto's Community Homophile Association. Today, it stands as a hub for diverse community activities.

5. Sustainability Through Natural Materials and Repair
Kintsugi is inherently sustainable, emphasizing the value of repairing and cherishing items rather than discarding them. This exhibition showcases the beauty of using only natural materials, without any synthetic chemicals. It will inspire visitors to consider the importance of sustainability in their own lives and communities, encouraging them to adopt more mindful practices.

6. An Immersive Experience of Renewal and Beauty
This exhibition offers visitors a deeply immersive experience, where they can engage with Kintsugi pieces that are not only restored but also accompanied by the personal stories of the owners. As visitors walk through the space, they witness the transformation of broken objects into something even more beautiful, symbolizing healing and renewal.
In addition to the main exhibition, a Zen room will be available, providing a space for introspection. Visitors can reflect on themselves through a mirror adorned with Kintsugi designs, creating a contemplative experience that invites them to connect with their inner thoughts. The emotional impact of seeing these restored items, along with this personal reflection, allows visitors to find inspiration in the resilience of both the objects and the people behind them.

By supporting this project, you help create a space where art, life, and personal reflection come together in a meaningful and transformative way.
