The Curveball

On March 21, 2019, Kirk started having sharp pains around his appendix and decided to go to the emergency room because Jacki was in New Hampshire visiting friends. After blood and urine tests came back normal, a CT scan was ordered and showed a growth on the tail of his pancreas and lesions on his liver. The doctor told them that the growth was likely pancreatic cancer, but would need to be confirmed by biopsy.  

From the moment of initial diagnosis in the ER, to Jacki and Kirk's parents catching immediate flights to San Francisco, to his friends and family gathering at their home to share love and compassion, Kirk has been surrounded by positivity day in and day out. Kirk's perspective started to shift from despair to one of hope and strength. Quickly, he framed the situation into an opportunity for personal growth, embracing the preciousness of life, and for deepening connections with loved ones. He has been able to truly see how much he is loved more than ever before!

Treatment

A biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer, which has metastasized to his liver. Kirk's family and friends, already hard at work networking and researching the most comprehensive path for healing, found a clinical trial (Parker Study) through UCSF Medical Center, which was showing promising results for a family friend's cancer treatment. In collaboration with his oncologist at Kaiser Permanente, Kirk has been referred to this chemotherapy trial which also includes immunotherapy.  Immunotherapy, the new rage in cancer treatment, has been FDA approved for other cancers, but not yet for pancreatic cancer. 

Holistic Healing

In addition to chemotherapy and immunotherapy, Kirk, will be embracing a Holistic Healing philosophy and surrounding himself with a team of healers. 

As many of you know, Kirk and Jacki are psychotherapists and healers, themselves, in private practice. There are wonderful benefits to running one's own therapy practice, however, in times of personal crisis, financial strain can add to the stress of healing and recovery. In order to support both Kirk and Jacki throughout this healing journey, we want them to be able to readily access all of the resources possible to care for their physical, emotional, and spiritual health, as well as their day-to-day living needs.

Your Contributions in Action!

How funds will be used:

*Kirk's side of rent and bills: $4,000/month

*Cleaning service: $150

*Kirk's office rent, which he is obligated to pay while away from his practice: $5,160

*Medical expenses: $7000 yearly deductible + out of pocket costs

*Psychotherapy (Kirk, Jacki, and couples therapy): $175/session

*Massage Therapy/Body Work: $8,000-$9,000/year 

* Qi gong Energy Healing (Kirk and Jacki): $120/session 

*Groceries/Nutritional Therapy (supplements, juicing, organic food):  $100-$150/week 

*Acupuncture/Herbalist: $130/session

* Fertility preservation (freezing Jacki's eggs and Kirk's sperm donation, as they were trying to start a family when the diagnosis came): $10,000 to freeze eggs, $1,400 sperm donation

*Lyft/Uber transportation to treatment or the hospital: $30 round/trip

* Trip away to nature for self-care: $300-$1500
