Ki's Road to Recovery

On Thursday 22nd July 2021 my 20 year old brother Ki was rushed to hospital following a bicycle accident, where it was confirmed he had broken and dislocated his back, damaging his spinal cord. Also, breaking his neck, cracking his ribs and puncturing a lung. He had 6-hour emergency spinal surgery that night leaving him with metal rods and screws in his back. He is currently paralysed from the chest down and has been told he may never walk again. He is in intensive care, been in and out of sedation and his breathing is being supported with a ventilator. He is the bravest and strongest person I know; he is in excruciating pain from his injuries, has picked up infections and is now dealing with the mental battles as he comes to terms with his new reality. My family and I are completely distraught and in disbelief, but the one thing getting us through is hope.

In the following months Ki will be transferred to Stoke Mandeville Hospital for specialist treatment and will need extensive rehab. As amazing as the NHS is, there is a huge lack of funding preventing Ki being able to access the intense physiotherapy he needs, something only the private sector can offer which comes at a great cost. And when the time comes for Ki to return home, house modifications will need to be made for him to lead an independent life.

Anyone that knows Ki will know what an active, outgoing, and all-round incredible person he is. He spends his life working hard in his physical job, going to the gym, biking, motocross and a newfound love of surfing. He will be determined and dedicated in not letting this accident define his future. We all believe in him and will do everything we can to give our boy the best possible chance at beating the odds, which people have done before! Ki is not the type of person to ask for help but has found the courage to let us create this page. Anything to support Ki on his recovery journey would mean the world, thank you.
