Kit Zayas House Fire

Donation protected
Hi, I'm Michelle, and I am starting this Go Fund Me to help my mother-in-law, Kit Zayas as she recovers and restarts after a housefire.

A brief synopsis of who Kit is:
  • A tennis player
  • A local real estate agent and home stager
  • An animal lover and instrumental part of the animal rescue community
  • A singer
  • A single mother to three
  • A grandmother to three

We were woken up in the early morning hours of July 28 by a frantic phone call from Kit saying her house was on fire.

She woke up to a smoke-filled home but was able to get out safely and call 911. By the time the fire department got to her home, the garage and roof were in flames. She stood helplessly watching as the firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the fire. As the firefighters were finishing their work, Kit was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and remained there overnight for observations.

Kit has been an instrumental part of the animal rescue community in the North Florida area. She started as a volunteer helping with kittens that were waiting to be adopted, to then taking on a staff position at the shelter she had been volunteering. She even turned a room in her own home into a kitten room, where she was able to bring home and help young, abandoned kittens gain weight, and become healthy enough to be adopted. Over her few years with the shelter, she has helped thousands of cats and kittens be adopted into loving furever homes. In addition to the foster cats she works with, she has three of her own cats, all of whom were rescues themselves. Unfortunately, one of them did not escape the fire, and one is currently still missing.

In addition to her passion for helping animals find their forever homes, she is also a real estate agent and home stager that helps people find their forever homes! Kit enjoys music (she is a trained opera singer!), playing tennis, and is an avid art collector. Some of her prized possessions like her baby grand piano, and original artwork were lost in the fire.

Kit relocated to St. Augustine after years of living in Central Florida, because the beach is her "Happy Place". She chose a house that was on the marsh because she loved to see the beautiful canvas in the sky at each sunset. Her home brought her so much joy, and sharing her "Happy Place" with her boys and grandsons only increased that joy.

As she is still starting to wrap her head around what has happened and the next steps. Her family is coming together from all over the country to help get her through this. She will be making some tough decisions and will be facing high costs for the replacement of all of her belongings. Any support you can give is appreciated more than you know.

Thank you so much!
