Kitano's Recovery

Many of you have heard the story of Kitano, the dog thrown from an 18-wheeler on Hwy 101. Follow here for the full story:

Yesterday, it was determined by the emergency vet that because there were multiple fractures to Kitano's body, the surgery estimates were $5000-$8000. Kitano's owner Ryan is a hard-working man, but he does not have the financial means to cover this. He was already borrowing funds from loved ones and friends to cover the initial expenses for the vet care Kitano had received so far which was well over $2300. The other option given to Ryan was to euthanize Kitano. This was a heartbreaking position Ryan now found himself faced with.
We did not feel that Kitano survived his ordeal and was rescued in the nick of time, to now not have a chance at recovery and a life with Ryan. There had to be another way! We spoke to AARF's rescue vet, Dr. Martinez of Gilroy Veterinarian Hospital, to try to find a way to save Kitano. A plan was made to get Kitano home safely to
Kansas where the surgeries can be done for a fraction of the costs and where Ryan's mother, who is a former vet tech, has connections in their town for getting Kitano the care he needs. Dr. Martinez wrapped Kitano up to keep his body stable, pain management support as well as antibiotics were given to Kitano and we helped Ryan pack him comfortably into a crate for the long ride home. They hit the road yesterday evening to rush Kitano home. Ryan will send us updates and progress reports as soon as they arrive.
When we offered to try to raise funds for Kitano's care, Ryan could not believe that a community of total strangers would ever be willing to do something like that for his dog. We know better of course! This is an incredibly generous and supportive community - especially for animals! Any amount you can give will help Ryan save his beloved dog Kitano.
