KKDiscount Recovery Fund After NYC Chinatown Fire
Donation protected
On Thursday, April 14, 2022, at 3:50am, a fire broke out at 78 Mulberry Street in NYC’s Chinatown, quickly rising to two alarms with more than 100 fire personnel responding to the scene. As a result, two residents died in the fire with other residents injured and businesses severely impacted. Due to the severity of the fire, KK Discount will indefinitely be closed until they receive the green light from the City that it is safe to resume business.
Like many small businesses in Chinatown, KK Discount is a mom-and-pop store that has been serving the Chinatown community and the broader New York City area for over 30 years. It’s known for its traditional dishware, woks, mahjong sets and even storage containers, supplying many Chinatown restaurants. This multigenerational, legacy business has faced its share of struggles since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, KK Discount saw its business drop as much as 70% and owners Mr. and Mrs. Li have worked fiercely to revive the business slowly during and post-pandemic.
I personally met Mr. and Mrs. Li during the pandemic while supporting their business, and fundraising and distributing personal alarms to them and other small businesses in Chinatown. With their big hearts, they helped me get the word out and introduced me to other business owners to ensure they received alarms. Recently they partnered with me to purchase and ship 35 sets of bowls, plates and serving platters to support refugees resettled in the DC area.
The Lis take great pride in their work and do not deserve to lose their entire livelihood, which is why I am setting up this campaign to raise the necessary funds to help them survive for the next stage in order to recover. The donations will not only go towards the loss of inventory, it will assist with clean up, repairs and immediate loss of income due the mandatory shutdown which may last for many months.
Please share! If you're in a position to donate, please chip in. Thank you in advance for your support and generosity.
